I skimmed the names quickly while making my way to the locker that was half open with yellow striped tape.
I proceeded to feed my curiosity.
I saw calendars from different years... it went from late nineties to... well, to early two-thousand-tens... It stopped there.
ACT 2.9
I remember that week, every day of it, every single hour of it. Such a nightmare to live.
I hear Grace coming back from her dance course, I was immersed into my cartoons, she tried to talk to me but I was busy getting entertained. I heard mom talking to her, while preparing dinner. I had my watch next to me, waiting for the perfect timing.
â And Hop!â
I instantly heard the keychain tapping against our front door. I muted the TV and ran to the door. It was the 29th perfect timing in a row!
My father always comes at this time, not late, not in advance. 20:21; Tomorrow I will make a month of flawless timing.
âDanny, how are you big one?â
I pointed at the kitchen. He didnât kiss me as he used to. I felt something was off.
He ran to the kitchen, I watched the scene from afar, he kissed my mother on her forehead, I saw her face going pale and scared, she hugged him and wouldnât let go of him. I didnât understand anything, my sister came to me and sat with me on the couch, we waited for our parents to finish their hushed talk.
Normally once my dad closes the door, the lights outside die instantly. But this time they remained.
I ran to the window to see what was happening outside. I noticed that there were two additional cars waiting outside with his.
I heard his footsteps coming back to me, I turned around, and found him right behind me. My dad crouched with a smile and wet eyes.
âTake great care of your sister and your mother, Dad will be busy at work for a week, I promise to be back as soon as I finish work, promise, big one?â
I nodded, I didnât know much of what he meant, I had an intuition that it was more than that... I was Six but even children know when adults speak to us in that air of fakeness to avoid worrying us... ridicule.
He went out, just like that, didnât close the door, didnât even look back... how cold. How sad...
Every day passed; I was waiting for the day he would come back. I started writing and journaling my activities each day he was away so that when he comes back, I wouldnât forget to tell him everything he missed.
It was the big day! Rain was pouring heavily; my sister and I came back home early. We bought him some gifts and our mother prepared a special dinner for his return, I went to check my little watch he gifted me on my last birthday. He was only minutes away from opening the door.
I kept looking at the watch for God knows how long, I was so excited I missed my cartoon.
